Samoyeds are friendly, gentle, and stunningly beautiful โ but they're working sled dogs underneath all that white fluff. They need vigorous daily exercise and constant grooming. Without enough activity, they bark, dig, and chew. Without enough brushing, their coat mats painfully within days.
2 walks per day, 30โ45 minutes each, with play sessions
Samoyeds were bred to pull sleds, herd reindeer, and keep their owners warm at night. They have real endurance and need brisk, purposeful walks. Avoid hot weather โ that thick double coat makes them overheat fast. Walk early morning or evening in summer.
2 meals per day
Moderate eaters compared to similarly-sized breeds. They evolved to be efficient with calories in harsh Arctic conditions. Watch for weight gain in summer when exercise decreases due to heat.
Daily brushing, thorough grooming sessions 2โ3 times per week
Their thick white double coat is high maintenance. Daily brushing prevents matting. The twice-yearly coat blow is extreme โ you'll brush out enough fur to build a second dog. Never shave a Samoyed โ their coat insulates against both heat and cold.
Recommended vet schedule: Annual exam, kidney function tests, eye checks yearly
Three features that matter most for this breed:
That stunning white coat mats painfully without daily brushing โ never skip a day
Log walk times to avoid midday heat โ Samoyeds overheat dangerously in warm weather
