Great Pyrenees are calm, independent, and built for endurance rather than speed. They were bred to guard sheep on mountain slopes, patrolling at their own pace for hours. They need daily walks but will refuse to run โ and that's by design.
1โ2 leisurely walks, 20โ30 minutes each at their pace
Great Pyrenees set their own pace โ and it's slow. Don't force them to jog. They prefer long, leisurely patrols. In hot weather, they'll refuse to walk at all, and they're right to do so. Walk early or late.
2 meals per day
Despite their size, Pyrs eat surprisingly little for a giant breed. They're efficient with calories. But bloat is still a risk โ space meals from exercise and feed from elevated bowls.
2โ3 times per week, daily during shedding season
Their thick white double coat sheds heavily, especially in warm months. Regular brushing prevents matting. Never shave a Great Pyrenees โ their coat insulates against both heat and cold.
Recommended vet schedule: Every 6 months, with joint assessments
Three features that matter most for this breed:
Set time-based targets at their pace โ Pyrs patrol, they don't power-walk
Log meal times and walk times to maintain safe spacing
Increase grooming frequency during coat blow โ your vacuum will thank you
